Title: Secondary Analysis of Qualitative Data
Date: 8-9 May 2012
Location: Colchester
Qualitative researchers often don't think about re-using research data, but there are many reasons to consider it:
It can expand or augment current work
It saves the time and costs required to collect original data, and opens up access to data you may not have been able to collect yourself It can spark new collaborations with other data users as well as data creators There is a rich resource of data available, as UK research councils now mandate that funded researchers deposit their data with the UK Data Archive and other designated data centres The data are free to access and use - and most can be downloaded directly from a website
Now a two-day course is available specifically for researchers looking for training in the method and practice of secondary data analysis of qualitative data. The workshop is set for 8-9 May 2012 at the UK Data Archive, located at the University of Essex in Colchester.
The course will combine presentations and practical sessions addressing the key issues in secondary analysis: research ethics, methodological challenges, data context and sampling.
The workshop is suitable for all researchers who are contemplating, or already using, secondary analysis in their research. A grounding in, and familiarity with, qualitative research methods, is a prerequisite.
This course is offered as part of the ESRC Advanced Training Network. These training courses offer social science postgraduates the opportunity to access high quality advanced training both within and outside of their home institution, whether in their own discipline, a particular research method, or in a different area of research in order to develop new skills and knowledge.
The course fee is #60 for UK-registered students; #120 for staff from UK academic institutions/research centres), ESRC funded researchers and UK registered charitable organisations; and #440 for all other participants. The course fee includes course materials, lunch and morning and afternoon refreshments. The fee is non-refundable unless notice of cancellation is received within five working days of the event. Travel and accommodation are to be arranged and paid for by the participant.

To fill that gap, the UK Data Archive is offering an in-depth two-day course where researchers can develop their knowledge and professional skills in handling and managing the research data they produce.
The hands-on workshop is set for 26-27 April 2012 at the UK Data Archive, located at the University of Essex in Colchester. The course will focus on all kinds of social science data - quantitative and qualitative - across the following seven areas:
the benefits of good data management
data management planning
documenting and contextualising your data formatting your data storing your data, including data security, data transfer, encryption and file sharing ethics and consent data copyright
